Why Everton should go ahead with their decision to sell Fraser Hornby

According to Liverpool Echo, Everton are on the verge of reaching an agreement with Stade de Reims for the sale of Fraser Hornby.

The report also claims that a host of European clubs are in line for the 20-year-old striker’s signature. However, Ligue 1 side Reims are in prime position. Meanwhile, Hornby is entering the final 12 months of his contract at Goodison Park, and the club have decided to offload their young forward.

Both Reims and Everton have held talks regarding the youngster, whom the Toffees value around the region of £1.8million. Hornby has spent this season on loan with Belgian top-division side KV Kortrijk.

However, Kortrijk are not exercising the option to buy Hornby, who has featured 14 times across all competitions for them and scored four goals.

Hornby joined Everton in September 2014 from Northampton Town and made his senior team debut two years in the side’s Europa League fixture against Apollon Limassol.

Hornby surplus to requirements at Everton

Everton have had a mixed season in the Premier League and are currently 12th in the league table. They have scored 37 goals in 29 league games, thanks to the good form of their strikers Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison.

Both Calvert-Lewin (13) and Richarlison (10) have scored the major share of the team’s league goals this season, ensuring manager Carlo Ancelotti that the striker’s department is not one he needs to worry about next season.

They also have young Italian Moise Kean, who arrived from Juventus last summer as a back-up apart from Cenk Tosun and veteran Oumar Niasse, who are way down the pecking order.

With the side already well-stocked in front of the goal, Hornby seems surplus to the club’s requirements at the moment. Hence, the club’s decision to sell him is indeed a step in the right direction.

Verdict

Young strikers Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison have been in top form this season and Everton also have enough back-up in their ranks, meaning opportunities will be rare for Hornby. It would be wise of the club to sell the young striker, who in all these years has failed to break into the senior side.
