Why Everton should make a move for James Rodriguez

According to Spanish outlet Marca (h/t Daily Mail), Real Madrid midfielder James Rodriguez is open to a move to Everton where he can link up with former manager Carlo Ancelotti.

Rodriguez, 28, came through the ranks of Envigado FC’s youth system and played for FC Porto and Monaco earlier in his career. After claiming the Golden Boot award in the 2014 World Cup, he earned a move to Real Madrid and was successful in Spain in his initial years. However, after his loan spell with Bayern Munich, he has been frozen out under Zinedine Zidane this season.

Meanwhile, Everton have been inconsistent throughout the campaign despite a change in management. Carlo Ancelotti’s era kick-started on a high note but the Toffees have failed to carry the momentum forward.

They have failed to win any of their last three games and have slipped to 12th position in the league standings. Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison are the only forwards in form at the moment, whereas Theo Walcott, Alex Iwobi, Bernat and Gylfi Sigurdsson haven’t contributed much to the team. Of the 37 goals scored so far, the strike duo has netted more than half of the team’s goals for Everton.

Their attacking unit has looked dull for the majority of the campaign with Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison receiving limited supply up front.

Everton boss Ancelotti has a lot of work to do in terms of finding the right bunch of players to lead their attack. Therefore, he has to bring reinforcements in the summer and add depth in the squad as they have limited creative players. Iceland international Sigurdsson has managed to pick up just 1 goal and 2 assists so far.

Hence, making a move for Real Madrid outcast James Rodriguez would be a good choice for the club, which has been dull in the attack.

Apart from playing under Zidane, the 28-year-old has been valuable to the squad. He has got immense experience at the highest level and can be crucial for Everton with his creativity.

The Colombian international has scored at a decent rate and could provide the Toffees with the much-needed extra goals as well from midfield if he is given enough opportunities. He has already played under Ancelotti and this would be a good chance for Rodriguez to revamp his career.

Verdict

Everton’s attacking unit has failed to deliver in demanding situations and if they are to give a better comeback next season, they need to sign players with quality. Therefore, the Toffees should attempt to lure Rodriguez to Goodison Park in the summer to add firepower to their attacking rank.
