Why Everton should revive their interest in Marcos Senesi
Back in July, The Boot Room (h/t Liverpool Echo), claimed that Everton were interested in signing Feyenoord star Marcos Senesi to strengthen their backline.
The report also suggested that the Dutch outfit wanted £18m for the Argentine but the Toffees could face competition to secure his services as Getafe, Atalanta and Sevilla are also keen to sign him. He has also refused to sign a new contract in order to move to a bigger league.
Profile
Born in Argentina, Senesi flourished through the ranks of San Lorenzo’s youth system and made his senior bow in the 2017/18 campaign. He went on to make 69 appearances for the Argentine outfit before joining Feyenoord last September.
Though he initially struggled to make it to the starting XI, he became a key member of the squad and helped his side to a third-place finish in the league table before the league got cancelled. He also played a crucial role in helping his side reach the finals of the TOTO KNVB beker Cup.
He was brilliant for Feyenoord in the last season and his impressive performances also earned him a call-up to Argentina’s U23 squad last year.
Senesi could be a future leader in Everton’s defence
Toffees boss Carlo Ancelotti has managed to bring in some high-profile names to his squad before the start of the new season. Everton’s midfield has been bolstered this summer but the manager needs to bring in reinforcements to other key areas as well. And the defensive unit needs to be strengthened.
At the moment, only three recognized centre-backs are available at Ancelotti’s disposal. Mason Holgate was injured in the pre-season against Preston and walked away in crutches.
Yerry Mina is also facing fitness issues after a thigh injury he picked up last season. Michael Keane is the only senior defender fit at the moment for the Toffees. Thus, signing a centre-back should be a priority for Ancelotti.
In that regard, making a move for Senesi would do them a world of good. The Argentine has been in terrific form for Feyenoord and has shown immense potential in the last couple of seasons. He could be a crucial player in the absence of Holgat.
Moreover, Everton are not blessed with a deep cover in central defence. Hence, signing the 23-year-old would help them improve the depth in the squad. And if he is able to continue with the fine form, Senesi could be a fantastic signing for the Toffees’ backline.

Verdict
With limited options and injury concerns, it is clear that the Toffees are in need of centre-backs. And Senesi could provide them with some much-needed quality. Thus, reigniting their interest in the Argentine would be a wise decision by the club.
