Why Everton should take a punt on Ryan Bertrand
According to The Sun, Everton could be the next destination for Ryan Bertrand. The veteran Southampton defender is in the final six months of his contract and wants a new deal with a pay rise. The Saints are reluctant to offer the same and that could see him depart the club either this month or on a free transfer in the summer.
Everton need cover for Lucas Digne
Since joining the Toffees, Digne has developed into one of the best full-backs in the Premier League. In his debut campaign with the Merseysiders, the 26-year-old missed just three league outings, finishing with an impressive return of four goals and assists each.
The 27-year-old enjoyed a productive 2019/20 campaign as well, racking up one goal and eight assists. Digne has carried on from where he left off last season, as Everton have punched above their weight this time out.
However, apart from Digne, there’re not very many players with equal capability. Niels Nkounkou and Ben Godfrey have chipped in the Frenchman’s absence. While they haven’t done badly, they don’t provide the impetus that Digne provides. Adding another player in that position with similar attributes should be a priority.
Ryan Bertrand can be worth a go
Ever since his move from Chelsea, Bertrand has adapted his game to the many managers Southampton have hired and fired. He has managed to keep his place cemented and despite the age, he still looks to have the qualities for a decent left-back.
He is eager as always to go forward and join the attack, yet not compromising on his defensive duties. However, Ryan Bertrand is past 30 now and is in the last year of his contract, unless there is a renewal this season. At that age, he can afford to sit out games and play sporadically.

With his contract running out, Everton can look to get him on the cheap. He already has plenty of Premier League experience, which only adds to the appeal. Not only would he provide good cover for Digne, he can also add to the competition. This looks like a good deal for the Toffees and they should pursue Bertrand at the earliest.
