Why Thiago Silva to Everton could boost their defence
According to L’Equipe (h/t The Sun), Everton are interested in signing Thiago Silva in the summer after the defender refused to extend his contract with Paris Saint-Germain.
Silva, 35, came through the ranks of Fluminense’s youth system. After spells in Portugal, Brazil and Russia, he moved to AC Milan in 2009 where he made a name for himself, making 119 appearances for the Italian giants. He played a crucial role in Milan’s title-winning campaign in the 2010/11 season.
He was signed by PSG in the summer of 2012 and since then, the 88-cap Brazilian international has made 310 appearances for the French giants. He has won 23 trophies with the French champions, including 7 league titles. He has established himself as a world-class defender. The report also suggests that AC Milan are looking for a reunion with the Brazilian.
Carlo Ancelotti’s era took off well at Everton but they have been inconsistent. They are currently 12th in the table. The manager needs to bring in reinforcements to the squad if they are to progress in the future.
Silva could be a leader in Everton’s defence
One of the chief reasons for their lacklustre performance is the ineffectiveness of their backline. The Toffees have conceded 46 goals so far. This doesn’t sound good for a team of their calibre.
Yerry Mina and Michael Keane are the two first-choice centre-backs. But they have not been up to the mark. Young Mason Holgate, who looks to keep doing better every time, has been shifted regularly between the defensive midfield and centre-back roles. Apart from them, Everton don’t have a recognized central defender. Thus, a centre-back is a must in the summer.
In that regard, Silva would be a good signing for the club. He has made over 500 club appearances and is one of the best in the business. He would definitely bring in a wealth of experience to the Toffees’ inexperienced backline and could be a leader for them for a short time.
Verdict
At 35, the Brazilian still has the energy left to play at the highest level and could be a key player under Ancelotti next season. His leadership skills are highly recognized and he could make a difference in Everton’s backline. Thus, they should lure Silva to Goodison Park this summer and make use of him for as long as possible.
