Why Federico Chiesa to Manchester United would bolster their attack
As per La Nazione (h/t MEN), Manchester United have identified Fiorentina star Federico Chiesa as a replacement for Jadon Sancho if they fail to land the English sensation in the summer.
Chiesa, 22, came through the ranks of Fiorentina’s youth system and succeeded with the club’s youth teams before getting promoted to the senior set-up in July 2016. Since then, he has been an integral member of the squad and is one of the best young talents in the country.
He has made 150 appearances at club level and has also been capped 17 times by Italy despite being just 22. The youngster has been in sensational form this season and the report suggests that the Italian outfit are willing to sell him for the right money. Thus, United should make a move for Chiesa at the earliest.
The Red Devils, meanwhile, managed to earn a Champions League spot in the final game of the season as they beat Leicester City 2-0 and finished 3rd in the league standings. They have also qualified for the quarterfinals of the Europa League and are aiming to lift the only title available for them at the moment.
However, the manager should look to strengthen the squad for next season if they are to challenge for various titles. Adding depth to the squad would also benefit them in the future.
Chiesa could provide depth to United’s wide areas
The English giants are long-term admirers of Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho, who has a price tag of £108m. Given the high price tag of the young star, there’s no guarantee if the Red Devils can get their desired target.
Thus, making a move for Fiorentina’s Chiesa would be a smart decision by the club. The Italian has been in good nick, especially since the restart and has notched up 10 goals and 9 assists in 34 Serie A games this season. He has gone from strength to strength in the last few years and could be a valuable addition to Solskjaer’s squad.
At United, Daniel James seems to have lost his spot on the right side of the attack to Mason Greenwood. The 18-year-old academy graduate successfully completed his first full season with the senior team but needs the experience to start regularly. In that regard, adding Chiesa would help them improve the squad depth and the Italian would definitely bring in healthy competition for the spot.
Despite his tender age, he has already shown immense potential and could also go on to represent United in the long run if he is able to continue with the fine form. He is just 22, and still has a lot of room for development under the Norwegian tactician’s guidance.
