According to Chronicle Live, Arsenal are planning to rope in Newcastle United goalkeeper Freddie Woodman, who currently plies his trade with Swansea City on loan.
Woodman, 23 came through the ranks of Crystal Palace and Newcastle United’s youth ranks before going out on several loan spells. Though he struggled for regular game time in the past few years, he has been brilliant for the Swans this term.
The youngster has been a regular starter under Steve Cooper and has earned rave reviews for his brilliant performances. However, he has found it difficult to make it through to the Magpies senior squad due to the presence of Martin Dubravka, who has been on top of his game for both Slovenia and Newcastle. Hence, Arsenal attempting a move for Woodman would be the right move.
The Gunners endured one of their worst seasons under Unai Emery but the arrival of Mikel Arteta as the head coach has brought positivity into the side. They haven’t lost a league game since the turn of the year. They are currently 9th in the league table and are hoping for European qualification, with Tottenham and Sheffield United ahead of them.
However, the loss to Olympiacos in the Europa League highlights the need for changes in several key areas. And, to add depth to the squad, the manager should look to strengthen the goalkeeping department along with other positions.
Bernd Leno has been excellent in the league whereas Emiliano Martinez has done well in the other Cup competitions. Though the Gunners have two good shot-stoppers in their ranks, they need to bring in a replacement for Matt Macey.
The academy product hasn’t got enough opportunities and could be on the move since his contract comes to an end in the summer. Therefore, Woodman would be a viable option for the Gunners.
The 23-year-old has been in sensational form of the Swans this term, keeping 11 clean sheets in 37 games and helping his side reach the 11th position in the Championship table. He could definitely provide a healthy competition to Leno and Martinez, given his superb run of form.
Woodman has the ability to succeed at a higher level and could also be seen as a future prospect since he is young and British. And given Macey’s position at the club, woodman would be a great addition to Arteta’s squad.
The former English U21 international is just 23 and has a lot more to offer in the future. He has a bright future and the Gunners should be able to enjoy his best phase. He would definitely add quality and depth.
Therefore, the Gunners should make a move for woodman and manage to lure him to Emirates in the summer.
