According to Goal (h/t The Express), Tottenham are keen on signing Flamengo midfielder Gerson in the summer.
Gerson, 22, came through the ranks of Fluminense’s youth system and moved to Italy with AS Roma in the summer of 2016. After a disappointing spell with the Rome outfit, he was sent on loan to Fiorentina for a season where he picked up form, scoring 3 goals and providing 3 assists in 36 league games.
He was later signed by Flamengo last summer and, since then, he has been in imperious form. The youngster played a significant role in the club’s Copa Libertadores-winning campaign and has attracted interests across Europe. Top clubs like Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund are also interested in securing his services, as per The Metro.
The Lilywhites, meanwhile, have been inconsistent ever since they lost the Champions League finals last season. Their performances earlier in the campaign saw Mauricio Pochettino get sacked and they have continued to disappoint at a bigger stage.
Thus, Spurs boss Mourinho should bring in reinforcements to various key areas in the summer if they are to progress in further campaigns. The manager should also make sure that they have the required depth to keep themselves fit throughout a whole campaign.
One key area where the manager needs to focus on strengthening is the midfield. Tanguy Ndombele, Harry Winks, Giovani Lo Celso and Gedson Fernandes are the only four attack-minded midfielders available at the manager’s disposal.
Fernandes is on loan from Benfica and could be on his way back to Portugal once his contract comes to an end. While summer signing Ndombele has failed to live up to the expectations, Lo Celso and Winks have not been at their best. This has resulted in the failure of the team and thus, a midfielder is a must in the summer.
In that regard, signing Gerson would be a massive boost for the team. The Brazilian has regained his form since leaving Italy and is one of Flamengo’s best players this season. His improvement has seen him help the side lift the Brazilian Serie A title in the 2019 season.
At 22, the former Roma man is at the right time of his life to take a huge stride into the Premier League. His inclusion would definitely bring healthy competition within Mourinho’s squad, whilst also adding some much-needed depth. Thus, Tottenham should lure Gerson to North London this summer.
