According to The Mirror, Tottenham are interested in signing Flamengo midfielder Gerson in the summer as claimed by the player’s father.
Gerson, 22, flourished through the ranks of Fluminense’s youth system and joined AS Roma in the summer of 2016. But he had a disappointing spell with the Rome outfit and was sent on loan to Fiorentina, where he picked up his form.
He was signed by Flamengo last summer and has been in sensational form once again. He played a significant role in the club’s Copa Libertadores-winning campaign and has attracted interest from Europe. The report also suggests that Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund are also interested in signing him.
The Lilywhites, meanwhile, have endured a disappointing campaign so far. Their performances earlier in the campaign saw Mauricio Pochettino get sacked. They have been inconsistent ever since they lost the Champions League final last season.
The Jose Mourinho era saw them off to a good start but the results didn’t last long. They have been dumped out of other cup competitions, whilst also finding themselves in 8th position in the league standings.
The injuries to Harry Kane, Heung-Min Son and Steven Bergwijn has played a key role in their lacklustre performance in the latter stages of the campaign. Apart from that, Tottenham’s defence has also failed miserably, conceding 27 goals in the last 17 games.
Thus, Tottenham boss Mourinho should bring in reinforcements to their backline if they are to do better next season. The manager should also make sure that there is depth in every other area before the new season begins.
The Lilywhites also need reinforcements to their midfield. Moussa Sissoko, Tanguy Ndombele, Harry Winks, Giovani Lo Celso and Gedson Fernandes are the four attack-minded midfielders available at the manager’s disposal.
Fernandes in on loan from Benfica and could return to Portugal once his contract comes to an end. While Ndombele and Lo Celso have struggled to find form, Sissoko has struggled with injuries. And Winks has not been at his best. This has resulted in the failure of the team and thus, a midfielder is a must in the summer.
In that regard, signing Gerson would be helpful for the Lilywhites in the future. The Brazilian has bounced back impressively from his underwhelming spell in Italy and has established himself as a key member of Flamengo. He helped them lift the Brazilian Serie A title last season and has improved.
Gerson racked up 2 goals and 3 assists in the 2019 league season and has been one of their best players. He has a lot of room for development and under the guidance of Mourinho, the Brazilian could be a crucial member for Tottenham in the future. And his inclusion could also bring healthy competition within the squad.
At 22, the former Roma man is at the right time of his life to take a step into the Premier League. At the same time, Tottenham need to add quality to their midfield ranks. The Brazilian could provide them with much-needed depth. Thus, the Lilywhites should lure Gerson to North London this summer.
