According to AS (h/t Daily Mail), Real Madrid are set to battle arch-rivals Barcelona for the signing of midfielder Igor Gomes, who plies his trade with Sao Paulo in Brazil.
Gomes, 21, came through the ranks of Tanabi Esporte Clube’s youth system and joined Sao Paulo’s junior side in 2013. He was promoted to the club’s senior team in January 2019 and made 27 Serie A appearances last season, scoring two goals and providing two assists, helping the team to a 6th place finish in the league.
The youngster has been brilliant in the Brazilian Serie A and his game style has also drawn comparisons to Brazil legend Kaka, as per the report. Given, his performances and young age, Real Madrid should look to bring him to Spain.
Zinedine Zidane has done a brilliant job after returning for his second spell in charge of Real Madrid. After a disastrous last season, Los Blancos have managed to stay in the race for the La Liga title and have performed better in tougher games including the one against Barcelona earlier this month.
However, the manager has to make sure that the Spanish giants build their future right from this moment as many of their star players are above 30. In midfield, Luka Modric has been brilliant over the years but has fallen down the pecking order this term. Toni Kroos is another senior player in the squad and therefore, reinforcements should be brought in soon.
James Rodriguez has been frozen out by the manager and Brahim Diaz is another prospect who has seen limited game time. Therefore, they need to strengthen their midfield for the future and Igor Gomez would be the right choice for the club.
The Brazilian has featured in several games for the nation’s U23 and U20 teams and is developing fast. He can be seen as the future of Real Madrid alongside the likes of several other fellow young Brazilians like Vinicius Junior, Rodrygo Goes and Reinier Jesus.
An attacking midfielder by trade, Gomes is also capable of operating from a deep-lying role as he has done for his side on occasions.
With the signing of several young Brazilians, Los Blancos are already readying for the future and they could do well with one more youngster, who has been making all the right noises in his burgeoning career so far. (h/t Daily Mail)
Therefore, Madrid signing the 21-year-old would be a wise decision by the club.
