Why Isaac Hayden to Crystal Palace would bolster their midfield
According to Chronicle Live, Crystal Palace are keeping tabs on Newcastle United star Isaac Hayden ahead of the new campaign.
The report suggests that Hayden’s contract situation with the club hasn’t been smooth and he could leave the club as his contract comes to an end with the Eagles next summer. However, Palace could face competition if they decide to make a move for him, as West Ham are also monitoring his progress.
Profile
Born in England, Hayden started his journey with Brentwood Boys and Southend United before joining Arsenal’s youth academy in 2008. However, he couldn’t make it beyond two appearances for the Gunners senior team and was sent on loan to Hull City, where he made 24 appearances.
In the summer of 2016, he was signed by the Magpies and he immediately integrated himself into the starting XI. He has been a key figure in the squad and has made 130 appearances for the Tyneside outfit to date.
Hayden, who is also eligible to represent Jamaica, has represented England at various age-groups from U16 to U21.
Hayden could provide depth to Palace’s midfield
Roy Hodgson’s side endured a disappointing end to their campaign as they managed to win just 1 of their last 9 league games, losing seven of them. This highlights the need to bring in reinforcements if they are to do better next season.
One key area where the manager should focus on strengthening is the midfield. At the moment, there are two defensive midfielders available at Hodgson’s disposal. Club captain Luka Milivojevic has been a regular starter and is one of the best players in the squad.
Cheikhou Kouyate has also been brilliant in the middle of the park for the Eagles as he managed to make 36 appearances across all competitions last season. However, the Senegal international is already 30 and reaching the twilight of his career.
He wouldn’t be around for the future as he has just two more years left on his contract with the club. Thus, Palace should consider bringing in reinforcements this summer.
In that regard, Hayden would be a viable option for the club. The Englishman has been a regular for the Magpies and has done a decent job so far. He could be a replacement for Kouyate when the time is right.
Moreover, the former Arsenal man is capable of operating as a centre-back and also as a right-back. His versatile nature could provide them with depth in various positions. At the same time, he could bring healthy competition to Milivojevic in the defensive midfield role.

Verdict
At 25, Hayden has a lot more to offer in the future and Palace should take advantage of his contract situation and lure him to Selhurst Park. He could bring some much-needed quality to Hodgson’s squad and could also be a perfect replacement for the ageing Kouyate.
