According to The Sun, Manchester United could be set to swoop for Jamal Musiala of Bayern Munich. The youngster is deadlocked with Bayern over a new contract. It is being said that the club are unwilling to offer the eye-watering £100,000-a-week wages he demanded. That could see the youngster depart the club in the summer.
Jamal Musiala is a 17-year-old English-German midfielder who plays for Bayern Munich. A youth product of Bayern, the youngster spent time at the academies of TSV Lehnerz, Southampton and Chelsea before being snapped up by Bayern in 2019.
He spent 8 seasons in Chelsea’s youth teams, going up to the U-18’s. After moving to Bayern, he spent 2019-20 in the youth sides and reserve team. However, he was fast tracked into the first team this season. He was handed his senior debut against Freiburg last season.
This season, he became Bayern’s youngest scorer, with his first senior goal against Schalke. So far, he has made 20 appearances for the Bavarians, scoring 3 goals. Musiala has the option of representing either England or Germany at the international level.
Manchester United have a rich history of taking a punt on young players. Be it Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo or Anthony Martial, the club have never shied away from splashing the big bucks for them. They have even signed Facundo Pellistri and Amad Diallo for significant amounts this season.
Then there is the academy which has kept producing players who have become a part of the first-team. Players like Rashford, Greenwood, McTominay, Brandon Williams and Dean Henderson have all become regulars in the side.
Musiala could be a good addition to those names as the club have embarked on a long term strategy of investing in young players with potential. It looks like a good option for the player too, given the club’s philosophy.
At such a young age, Musiala has taken the Bundesliga by storm. Obviously, he has a long way to go in terms of development but the early signs point to a bright future. Manchester United should definitely snap up the 17-year-old if there is no progress in his contract talks. He may not be ready for the first-team but a couple of years in the reserves would get him ready.
