Why Kurt Zouma to Tottenham would bolster their defensive unit
According to RMC Sport (h/t The Metro), Tottenham are interested in signing Chelsea defender Kurt Zouma in the summer.
The 25-year-old is a product of Saint-Etienne’s youth academy. He was signed by Jose Mourinho for Chelsea in 2014. Though he has was sent on several loan spells throughout his Chelsea career, the centre-back has already won two Premier League titles with the Blues.
Last season, he was on loan with Everton and featured regularly for the Goodison Park outfit, which helped him integrate into Frank Lampard’s starting XI. Though he has not been at his best, he is one of the most talented centre-backs. Thus, Tottenham should make a move for him in the summer.
The Lilywhites have endured a disappointing campaign so far. They have been dumped out of the domestic cup competitions, whilst also finding themselves at 8th place in the league. Tottenham are unlikely to qualify for the Champions League next season.
Mourinho’s men have been inconsistent throughout the campaign. The arrival of the Portuguese manager saw them off to a good start but the results didn’t last long. They failed to live up to the expectations and are in a difficult situation.
The absence of Harry Kane, Heung-Min Son and January signing Steven Bergwijn is one of the major reasons for their lacklustre performance. They failed to hit the target on a regular basis and the defence has also failed miserably in some much-needed situations.
Zouma could be a future leader in Tottenham’s defence
Spurs have conceded 23 goals in their last 17 games under Mourinho and that doesn’t sound for good reading for a top team. Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen, Davinson Sanchez and Juan Foyth are the four centre-backs available at the manager’s disposal. The young Japhet Tanganga was recently promoted to the first-team.
Vertonghen has seen limited game time under Mourinho and could be on the move once his contract expires in the summer, as per the report. Thus, the manager should look to add depth to the squad. In that regard, signing Zouma would be a massive boost for the team.
The Frenchman has got the experience under his belt, featuring in over 100 games for Chelsea. He is highly talented and could form a strong partnership with Sanchez and Alderweireld at the back for Tottenham next season. His inclusion would definitely bring healthy competition within the squad.

Verdict
With a lack of quality in their defence, Tottenham are in dire need of centre-backs to bolster their backline. And with Vertonghen’s departure, their numbers would be reduced. Thus, signing Zouma would be a wise decision and he could go on to represent them in the long run.
