Why Leeds United need to sign Robin Koch to boost their defence
As per German outlet Bild (Yorkshire Evening Post), Leeds United’s £18m transfer target Robin Koch has admitted he is ready for the next big step in his career.
Koch, 23, came through the ranks of FC Kaiserslautern’s youth system moved to Freiburg in the summer of 2017. Since then, he has been a regular member under Christian Streich and has established himself as one of the best centre-backs in Bundesliga.
Meanwhile, Leeds United are atop the Champions standings despite their recent dip in form. Marcelo Bielsa has managed to lift the team as they are 7 points clear of the play-off position and are hoping for a return to the top-flight for the first time in 16 years.
The whites have performed extremely well in every area and their attacking unit, led by Patrick Bamford, has netted 56 goals so far. They have also been consistent at the back, as the defensive unit has conceded only 30 goals in 37 games.
Centre-backs Ben White, Liam Cooper and Gaetano Berardi have held their lines tightly, forming the best defensive unit in the second-tier. However, the manager has to plan for next season by bringing in defensive reinforcements.
Brighton loanee White is being eyed by several clubs in the Premier League and has the chance to return to the South Coast. His absence would leave a huge void to fill in as the youngster has performed consistently throughout the campaign.
On the other hand, Swiss international Berardi, who has been at Elland Road for 6 years, could be on the move when his contract expires at the end of the season. This would leave the Whites with just one established defender in Liam Cooper. Therefore, Bielsa should bring in centre-backs to add depth to his squad.
In that regard, Freiburg’s Robin Koch would be a good signing for the club as he been in fine form for the German outfit in the past two years.
The 23-year-old’s impressive performances also earned him a call-up the German national team as he made his debut last October against Argentina. He could be a proper replacement if any of the aforementioned centre-backs leave at the end of the campaign.

Verdict
Leeds have lacked depth in their backline this term after several of their centre-backs left last summer. They would find it difficult if they don’t bring in reinforcements to their backline at the earliest. And Koch’s quality would be a huge boost for the side.
Therefore, the Whites should make a move for the German international and lure him to Elland Road before the start of the new season.
