Former Leeds boss Simon Grayson has tipped the club to make a move for Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero, as per Daily Star.
Romero, 33, came through the ranks of Racing Club’s youth system before moving to AZ Alkmaar in the summer of 2007. He made a name for himself in the Dutch League and after making 112 appearances for the, he was signed by Sampdoria.
In 2015, Manchester United signed him and he has been a part of the side that won the UEFA Europa League and the FA Cup in 2017. However, he has always been an understudy to David De Gea and has represented the Red Devils mostly in the cup competitions. Thus, Leeds should take an opportunity to sign the Argentine this summer.
Leeds, meanwhile, have overcome the struggles in the past few seasons and have managed to reach the top of the Championship standings. Marcelo Bielsa has done a stellar job this season as his side are on the verge of qualifying to the top-flight.
The attacking and the defensive units have been brilliant. Patrick Bamford has led the line well so far, scoring 13 of Leeds’ 56 goals in the campaign. The defensive unit has conceded just 30 goals – the best defensive record in the league. Brighton loanee Ben White and Liam Cooper have been excellent in the heart of the Whites’ defence.
However, the manager should look to bring in reinforcements if they are to sustain and prolong in the top-flight once they are promoted. Many of the players are on loan and Bielsa should consider bringing in a few changes to the key areas.
One area where the manager should focus on strengthening is the goalkeeping department. Spaniard Kiko Casilla is the first-choice shot-stopper. Though he has kept 15 clean sheets so far, he has not been at his best, making costly errors.
Apart from him, Illan Meslier, Elia Caprile and Will Huffer are available at the manager’s disposal but none of them is experienced. They are just starting their careers and it wouldn’t be helpful if anyone goes on to become the first-choice goalkeeper next season.
In that regard, Romero would be an excellent option for the Championship leaders. Though he has featured in just 7 league games for United since his arrival in 2015, the Argentine has already proved himself at the highest level in various other leagues. He has also been capped 96 times by Argentina and his experience could come in handy for the club.
In 58 games he has played for United, the former Monaco man has kept 38 clean sheets and has conceded just 25 goals. He is one of the best goalkeepers in Europe and with the right opportunities, he could be a valuable addition to Bielsa’s squad.
With a lack of quality in their goalkeeping department, Leeds are in dire need of experienced shot-stoppers. At the same, Romero needs game time. He could provide the Whites with the much-needed depth in goal as well. Thus, the Whites should make a move for the Argentine international this summer.
