Why Leeds United should pounce on the chance to sign Juan Foyth

According to The Sun, Tottenham Hotspur are willing to sell Leeds United target Juan Foyth ahead of the new campaign.

The report suggests that Spurs boss Jose Mourinho has no room for the young Argentine in the next season and could be sold. And Foyth is being tipped to join Leeds United in order to work under fellow Argentinian Marcelo Bielsa. (h/t The Sun)

Born in Argentina, Foyth flourished through the ranks of Estudiantes’ youth system and was promoted to the senior set-up in January 2017. However, six months later, Tottenham signed him for £8m. Earlier, he showed immense potential despite receiving limited opportunities but an injury hampered his progress.

He made 17 appearances under Mauricio Pochettino in the 2018/19 campaign but hasn’t been the same since his return from injury. Last season, he managed to make just 4 league appearances and has fallen down the pecking order under Jose Mourinho.

However, the youngster has gone on to make 10 appearances for Argentina since making his debut in 2018.

Why Leeds United need Foyth

The Whites have been one of the busiest teams in the transfer window as they managed to make a handful of signings in preparation for their return to the top flight. In defence, Robin Koch is one notable signing which Leeds managed to pull off.

However, they need to bring in a few more reinforcements. With Koch in the squad, Bielsa has just two established centre-backs at his disposal.

While club captain Liam Cooper and the German international would be the first-choice in defence under Bielsa, the Whites don’t have enough backup. Pascal Struijk and Oliver Casey are inexperienced. And thus, they need at least another centre-back to bolster their backline.

To that end, Foyth would be a suitable option for the club. The Argentine already has some experience at the Premier League level and can be a crucial addition to the squad, which has lacked options at the back after Ben White returned to Brighton, while Gaetano Berardi is yet to be offered a new contract after his current deal ran out.

The 22-year-old is also capable of operating at the right side of the defence and his versatility would come in handy for the club. Moreover, Foyth is just 22 and can be seen as a long-term prospect for the Whites.

Verdict

At 22, Foyth still has a lot of room for development and has a huge future ahead of him. At the same time, Leeds lack depth at the back and the Argentine would provide them with some much-needed quality. Thus, they should attempt to lure the former Estudiantes man to Elland Road at the earliest.
