Why Leeds United should reignite their interest in Connor Goldson

Back in January, Leeds United targeted Rangers defender Connor Goldson to improve their defensive numbers, as per the Football Insider (h/t The Express).

However, the Gers boss Steven Gerrard insisted on keeping hold of Goldson and eventually a move did not take place and the Englishman stayed put at Ibrox.

Goldson, 27, came through Shrewsbury Town’s youth system and had featured for Cheltenham and Brighton before moving to Scotland in the summer of 2018. Since his arrival in Glasgow, he has been a regular starter for Gerrard’s side and has established himself as the first-choice centre-back.

In over 100 appearances for the Gers, he scored 8 goals and 2 assists and has been their best defender in the last two campaigns. He has been of immense help to the team and has marshalled Rangers’ backline to his best.

Meanwhile, Marcelo Bielsa should bring in some changes to the squad before the start of the new campaign regardless of their league status. One key area that needs to be addressed is the defensive unit.

The Whites have only three central defenders in their ranks in Ben White, skipper Liam Cooper and Gaetano Berardi. And they need to add depth to the squad at any cost.

White, who has been in excellent form, is on loan for Brighton and will leave at the end of the season. And Berardi’s contract at Elland Road comes to an end in the summer.

This would leave them with just Liam Cooper in the heart of the defence and therefore, Leeds must reignite their interest in Connor Goldson, who is an established centre-half.

The 27-year-old has featured in 47 games this season for the Gers. He has helped the club keep 23 clean sheets across all competitions and was instrumental in the win against Braga in the Europa League a few days back.

Goldson would be a perfect fit for Bielsa since his side has lacked depth. He already has experience in English football after playing 120 games for Shrewsbury Town.

Verdict

Leeds have to clinical in all the departments next season and their defensive numbers clearly indicate the need for a defender. Therefore, they must reignite their interest in the Englishman and make a move in the summer.
