Why Leeds United should keep hold of Kiko Casilla
Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan has urged the club to offload Spanish goalkeeper Kiko Casilla in the summer, according to Leeds Live.
Casilla, 33, came through the youth ranks of Real Madrid’s youth system and played for several clubs on loan before returning to Santiago Bernabeu in 2015. He was a part of the Real Madrid side that won three Champions League titles and three FIFA Club World Cup titles.
Despite winning several trophies, he could never establish himself as the first-choice and Leeds signed him in January 2019. Though he struggled in the second half of last season, he has been brilliant this term. Thus, they should keep hold of him beyond this summer.
Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa has managed to take his side to the top despite a few sticky performances in between. They have done a decent job at both ends of the pitch, scoring 56 goals and conceding just 30 so far, boasting of the best defensive unit in the Championship.
They are currently on top of the Championship table, one point ahead of West Brom. If they are promoted to the top-flight next season, the manager should look to form a strong team to sustain in the Premier league and keep progressing.
In that regard, keeping hold of Casilla would do a world of good for them. Illan Meslier, Will Huffer, Elia Caprile and Casilla are the four shot-stoppers available at the manager’s disposal. Apart from the Spaniard, all of them are young and inexperienced.
In 35 league games that Casilla has featured this term, he has kept 15 clean sheets and has conceded just 30 goals. The former Real Madrid man has been at his best and has impressed throughout the campaign.
The former Spanish international has made nearly 300 career appearances at a higher level and his experience would be hand for the club if they are promoted to the top-flight. Keeping him would also balance the depth in their goalkeeping department.

Verdict
At 33, he still has the energy to play at a higher level and Leeds should get the best out of him if they are promoted to the Premier League. He could be crucial for the side next season, especially given that the other shot-stoppers have little experience. Thus, keeping hold of Casilla would be a wise decision by the club.
