Why Leeds United should take a gamble on Axel Tuanzebe

According to The Sun (h/t Leeds Live), Leeds United could make a move for Manchester United youngster Axel Tuanzebe in the on-going transfer window.

Tuanzebe, 22, is a product of Manchester United’ youth academy. His major breakthrough came in the 2016/17 season but since then, he has failed to claim the spot for himself. He was sent on loan to Villa last season and despite struggling with injuries, he played a key role in the Villans’ promotion to the top-flight.

The youngster has struggled with injuries in the last couple of seasons but he did well whenever he got his opportunities under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer this term.

So far, he has made just 18 appearances for the Red Devils and doesn’t seem likely to get regular game time due to the presence of Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire in United’s defence. Thus, Leeds should take advantage of his situation at Old Trafford and attempt to secure his services this summer.

The Whites, meanwhile, have been promoted to the Premier League after an incredible Championship campaign. After 16 years of absence from the top-flight, Marcelo Bielsa has managed to take Leeds back to their best.

However, most of the main players in the squad are on loan and their departure could spell trouble for the Yorkshire-based club in the Premier League. Thus, the manager should look to bring in reinforcements on a permanent basis if they are to sustain in the top-flight.

Tuanzebe could add depth to Leeds United’s defence

Bielsa’s men did a brilliant job defensively, conceding just 35 goals, and boast of the best defensive record in the Championship. Club captain Liam Cooper led the team successfully and loan starlet Ben White played a key role in the campaign.

Apart from them, Gaetano Berardi is the only option available in central defence. He did well in the limited opportunities he received. But White’s return to his parent club would put them in a difficult situation. Thus, a young centre-back is a must at any cost.

In that regard, Tuanzebe would be a viable option for the club. The youngster may not have established himself at the highest level but with the right opportunities, he is capable of doing well. He could be a replacement for White if he is able to keep himself away from injuries.

His inclusion would certainly add depth to Leeds’ backline and the manager needs to be patient with him. With experience, he could go on to be a crucial player for the Whites in the future as he had already shown his qualities. The youngster is also capable of operating on the right side of the defence and his versatility could come in handy for the manager.

Verdict

With limited options at the back, it is clear that Leeds need to strengthen their backline. And taking a chance with Tuanzebe could pay off well if the English youngster regains his fitness and returns to his best form. And he could also go on to represent them in the future.
