Why Leicester City should make a move for Sardar Azmoun
As per AreaNapoli (h/t Leicestershire Live), Leicester City are set to battle West Ham and Everton for the signing of Iranian forward Sardar Azmoun, who plies his trade with Zenit St. Petersburg in Russia. Azmoun is valued at £30m.
The 25-year-old Iranian has established himself as one of the best strikers in Russia after playing for clubs like Rostov and Rubin Kazan before joining Zenit in February 2019. He immediately hit the gound running at Zenit and in 12 games last season, he scored 9 goals and set up 2.
He has also been a key figure for Iran since making his debut in May 2014. He has gone on to feature in 46 games, racking up an impressive 31 goals for his nation. He has been in fine form for the past few years and Leicester City should make a move for him in the summer.
The Foxes are riding high on the success of star striker Jamie Vardy, who has scored 17 goals so far, making him the league’s joint-top scorer. The Englishman has been a valuable asset for the club and under the guidance of Brendan Rodgers, he has propelled the side to 3rd position in the league standings.
However, with Vardy set to turn 34 next January, the manager should look to bring in an able backup for the former English international. Apart from him, the Foxes have only Kelechi Iheanacho to lead their attack. The Nigerian has done his best whenever he has got the opportunity but it would be wise to add competition up front with some new faces.
In that regard, Leicester should look to rope in Zenit St. Petersburg’s Azmoun as he is in the form of his life and would be a suitable option for the East Midlanders.
Azmoun may not be a prolific striker but he has scored regularly for the teams he has featured for. This season, he has bagged 14 goals and 7 assists in 29 games across all competitions and has helped his side to the top of the Premier Liga table.
Last season, the Iranian international finished with 16 goals for two different clubs and is capable of scoring 15 plus goals in a season. This would be a huge boost to Leicester’s attacking unit and he would definitely add depth to Rodgers’ squad.

Verdict
With limited options upfront, the Foxes should go all out for the Iranian and lure him to the King Power Stadium. He is just 25 and has a lot more to offer at a higher level and if he is able to replicate the same form, he could be a crucial player for them next season.
