We all love getting updates about players coming out of Tottenham’s academy. Academy prospects usually boast of unbridled potential and they’re fun to think about.
Spurs youngster Reo Griffiths is a player who has been gaining a lot of attraction for his displays with Tottenham’s U18 side. The youngster bagged a jaw-dropping 23 goals in 18 league games last season. He is dubbed to be the next ‘Harry Kane’, but he has a long way to go before he can justify that label.
At the age of 17, he’s a goal machine who is constantly on the rise. Cool, calm and composed in front of goal, the young striker loves scoring against Arsenal, putting 4 past them in a game last season.
He is on the verge of becoming a future superstar and Spurs should retain his services as clubs are lurking for a potential move. Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig are reportedly interested in the 17-year-old striker.
Griffiths is set to team up with the U23 side for a tournament in Germany, where Leipzig scouts are likely to be in attendance.
Griffiths scored 33 goals for the club in all competitions last season and Tottenham are in serious danger of losing him. The player’s contract will also run out in a matter of weeks and this does paint a worrisome prospect for Tottenham.
There have been calls to utilize the youngster as a backup to Harry Kane in the first-team but that makes no sense because Spurs have an experienced striker in the form of Fernando Llorente.
Given the intense level of competition these days, only a few youth players are promoted into the main squad. It would be great to see more players receive such opportunities, particularly at Tottenham. Spurs have a respected youth academy and will only acquire greater fame through the development of their youngsters.
It is obvious that the presence of Kane will keep the youngster out of the side for now. But it remains to be seen if Griffiths chooses to stay on and fight for his chance.
