Why Liverpool should snap up PSG’s Layvin Kurzawa on a free transfer

According to Spanish outlet Sport (h/t The Metro), Liverpool are among a host of clubs interested in signing Paris Saint-Germain left-back Layvin Kurzawa.

Layvin Kurzawa, 27, is an experienced defender and has been at Paris Saint-Germain since 2015. But he’s seen himself reduced to little more than a bit-part player this season and has managed just 23 appearances across all competitions.

The Frenchman, who has also attracted interest from Arsenal, Barcelona, Inter Milan and Napoli, is a free agent in the summer when his contract with PSG expires and he has told the Ligue 1 giants that he doesn’t intend to sign a new deal, the report adds. (h/t The Metro)

Meanwhile, Liverpool are in the driver’s seat to win the Premier League title. They are 25 points ahead of second-placed Manchester City, who have played a game less than the table toppers.

Jurgen Klopp has already made them a strong force to reckon with and their Club World Cup triumph proved that they are one of the top teams at the moment. A squad full of established stars and talented youngsters, the Reds have become too strong together.

However, injuries and suspensions are a part of every team in any league across the world and Liverpool are no exception. That has been well documented by the injuries to Jordan Henderson, Joel Matip, Alisson Becker, Dejan Lovren and Fabinho. Thankfully, the Reds have not had any setbacks at left-back position this season.

Liverpool have an established left-back in Andy Robertson, who has been excellent since arriving at the club from Hull City in 2017. He is currently in the peak of his form and has been sensational this season, with a goal and 7 assists in the league to his name.

However, a top club like Liverpool cannot bank on Robertson alone. They need a back-up for him if they wish to continue winning trophies under Klopp.

Therefore, the Merseysiders must do everything possible to win Layvin Kurzawa’s signature. Kurzawa has been at PSG since the 15/16 season, making a grand total of 123 appearances, registering 13 goals and 21 assists.

Bringing the PSG star in would ease the burden off Robertson’s shoulders, while also boosting numbers in defence. Robertson has been tirelessly operating down the left flank for the Reds for some time now, so it is quite essential that Klopp targets another left-back soon, and Kurzawa seems to be a right fit for that role.

Verdict

First and foremost, a club of Liverpool’s stature needs at least one backup player for a position. With experience at the highest level, Kurzawa’s acquisition would come handy at Anfield. And on a potential free transfer, the Frenchman would represent a massive coup for Klopp’s Liverpool.
