Why Liverpool should sign Florian Neuhaus

According to Kicker (h/t The Sun), Liverpool are set to enter a transfer battle for the signature of Florian Neuhaus. The 23-year-old German has impressed mightily in the Bundesliga and that has made Europe’s elite clubs take notice.

Along with Liverpool, Manchester City, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and Juventus are also said to be in the race to sign the midfielder with a £35m release clause.

Liverpool could end up losing Georginio Wijnaldum at the end of the season

Liverpool are still in the dark regarding the future of Georginio Wijnaldum. The midfielder is in the last five months of his current contract and it seems like no solution has been reached. (h/t Mirror)

Since joining the club in 2016, Wijnaldum has been an integral part of Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side. The midfielder is a dynamo on the pitch, covering every blade of grass and not stopping until the final whistle.

He has been used in multiple positions as per the team’s requirement and perhaps scored two of the most important goals in Liverpool’s recent history against Barcelona. Replacing him might not be the easiest of tasks given his contribution across the pitch.

Neuhaus may just be close to what Liverpool need

Florian Neuhaus ticks plenty of boxes at Liverpool as a young and developing central midfielder with a wide range of qualities. While essentially a box-to-box operator by trade, the German international has the skill set to switch seamlessly between attacking and defensive roles in the midfield.

The 23-year-old’s statistics at Monchelgladbach clearly underlines his ability to chip in with goals and assists even from a deeper position in the midfield. Neuhaus also has the work-rate to complement his creativity (h/t Sofascore). Should sound familiar to Liverpool fans.

Furthermore, Neuhaus has featured regularly in the group stages of the Champions League this season. This shows he has the talent and potential to thrive in more competitive surroundings moving forward.

With his best years still ahead of him at 23, Liverpool could well be looking at a like-for-like replacement in case Wijnaldum does end up leaving the club.
