Why Liverpool should make a move for Jamal Lewis

According to Goal (h/t The Express), Liverpool are eyeing a move for Norwich City youngster Jamal Lewis ahead of the summer transfer window. He is valued at £20m by his club.

Having spent four years in Luton Town’s academy, Lewis, 22, rose through the ranks of Norwich’s youth system and was promoted to senior set-up in January 2018. Since then, he has been a regular member under Daniel Farke and also played a key role in the Canaries’ promotion to the top-flight last summer.

He has been impressive for Norwich this season despite the team getting relegated. His performances have also attracted the attention of Leicester City, as per the report. With the Canaries moving back to Championship, Liverpool should try to lure the youngster to Anfield by offering him the chance to continue in the top-flight.

With the Reds now lifting the Premier League title after a long, long wait, it is time for the manager to shift his focus to the new season and build a team for the future. Klopp needs to address several areas with limited options in order to continue their dominance.

Lewis – A future left-back for Liverpool

At the moment, Andy Robertson is the only option available at left-back for the Reds. The Scottish international has been one of the best players in the league, contributing with 10 assists in the title-winning run. But it is clear that there is no proper backup for the former Hull City man.

Veteran James Milner did fill in the gap at times but the Englishman has not been at his best in that position. He is a midfielder by trade and a title-challenging team like Liverpool must have enough resources for every position.

To that end, Lewis would be a good option to consider. The Northern Ireland international has impressed in his debut season in the Premier League and has received rave reviews for his performances.

Though his numbers may not be as impressive as Robertson’s, he has shown immense potential in the 32 games he has featured across all competitions this term.

He could be used as an understudy to Robertson for a few years. This would give him the time to develop under the guidance of Klopp. And with experience, he can make an impact on the team. Given his form, he can go on to become successful in the league if he is able to develop himself.

With youngster Yasser Larouci wanting to leave, it is clear that Liverpool don’t have enough numbers at left-back. Thus, making a move for Lewis would be a wise decision by the club. He could go on to represent them in the future if he is able to continue with the fine promise he has shown.
