Why Liverpool signing Gleison Bremer would be a solid investment
According to the latest Twitter claims from Italian journalist Matteo Pedrosi, Liverpool are still very interested in signing Brazilian centre-back Gleison Bremer from Torino.
The Reds were initially linked with a move for the 23-year-old defender back in November while Merseyside rivals Everton were also understood to be monitoring him. The Italian journalist also adds that Liverpool are yet to make a formal approach for Bremer heading into the winter market, although he’s not the only centre-back currently on the club’s radar.
Profile
Bremer rose through the youth ranks of Desportivo Brasil and spent time on loan at Sao Paulo before rising to prominence with Atletico Mineiro in the top-flight. The defender caught the eye with his potential and the growing reputation prompted Torino to offer him a route to Europe in 2018.
The centre-back played only a bit-part role in his debut season, featuring 5 times in the Serie A, but made a big impact in the previous campaign. Bremer started 27 league fixtures for Torino last term, scoring thrice in the process, and played a key role at the back to help his side stave off relegation. (h/t Transfermarkt)
Despite Torino once again finding themselves locked in a relegation dogfight this season, Bremer has continued to impress, starting 12 out of the club’s 15 league fixtures so far. The centre-back has been one of the rare shining lights for the Italian outfit over a troubled past 18 months.
Liverpool need to bolster defence
Meanwhile, Liverpool finished the year atop the Premier League standings, despite settling for a drab goalless draw against Newcastle United on Wednesday night. The Reds haven’t really hit the same heights as they did en route to their first title triumph in 30 years last term. Jurgen Klopp’s side have lacked the ruthlessness to put the opposition to the sword, playing out 6 draws in the PL already.
Regardless of that, Liverpool have still done enough to emerge as the favourtites to defend their crown. However, Klopp has a few pressing concerns to sort out at the back heading into the winter market. The Reds are currently down to bare bones following long-term injuries to first-choice centre-backs Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez.
The recent injury to Joel Matip has further aggravated the defensive situation at the club as Liverpool prepare for a hectic second half of the campaign that could well decide the fate of their title defence.
Nathaniel Phillips and teenager Rhys Williams have stepped up really well alongside Fabinho as a makeshift centre-back. But it goes without saying that Liverpool’s lack of quality alternatives can jeopardise their hopes of retaining the PL crown.
Gleison Bremer is hardly among the household names in Europe but has proven his worth as a quality centre-back at Torino in the Serie A. The Brazilian has more than held his own in a struggling side in Italy and looks ready to embrace a bigger challenge in the Premier League.

Verdict
Suffice to say, a potential Gleison Bremer would certainly hand a welcome boost to Liverpool’s depleted backline. More importantly, the Brazilian also ticks plenty of boxes as a long-term option at Anfield. He still has plenty of room for development at 23 with his best years still potentially ahead of him. Having said that, Liverpool shouldn’t hesitate to take a punt on the Serie A star in January.
