Why Luca Waldschmidt to Chelsea would be a boost to their attack
According to The Sun, Chelsea are plotting a shock move for SC Freiburg forward Luca Waldschmidt in the summer to bolster their attacking options.
Waldschmidt, 23, has earned a name for himself in the Bundesliga and has been impressive in the past two seasons. He was instrumental in Germany U21 side’s run to the final of the European U21 Champions last year, banging in 7 goals in 4 games.
His impressive performances also earned him a call-up to the German national squad last October and since then, he has made 3 appearances. One of the best young talents in the country, Waldschmidt to Chelsea would be a perfect move.
The Blues have done well so far and are currently 4th in the league table. Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has done a stellar job so far despite having to do with injuries to a lot of key players.
In the attacking unit, former Borussia Dortmund man Christian Pulisic fell victim to injuries just when he began to settle. However, youngster Tammy Abraham has been sensational in leading the line, mostly featuring as a lone striker. The Englishman has scored 13 goals so far but he also got injured.
Olivier Giroud and Michy Batshuayi have seen limited game time and are on the verge of moving away from Stamford Bridge. They have failed to convince the manager throughout the campaign and it is time for Lampard to bring in reinforcements in the form of a youngster.
In that regard, Freiburg’s Luca Waldschmidt would be a viable option for the Blues and a move for the German would be a wise decision by the club.
Waldschmidt is one of the upcoming talents in Germany and has the ability to succeed at a higher level. He has impressed in the last two seasons and has been compared to German legend Gerd Muller, as per the report.
Last season, he racked up 9 goals and 3 assists in 30 league games and has continued with the fine form this term, having already scored 5 goals. He could be a good competition up front for Abraham and if he is able to replicate the same form, he would undoubtedly be a valuable addition to Lampard’s squad.
