Why Man United should make a move for RB Leipzig’s Timo Werner
According to a report from ESPN, Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is interested in any developments surrounding RB Leipzig star Timo Werner’s future.
Timo Werner, 23, has been in sensational form in the Bundesliga this season, scoring 20 goals in 19 games. He has also netted three goals in six Champions League games. ESPN claim the Germany international’s goalscoring record at Leipzig has caught the attention of Manchester United but the Bundesliga side have no intention of selling him in the January transfer window as they chase the league title.
Manchester United completed their first signing of the January transfer window in the form of midfielder Bruno Fernandes. With injuries to Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay leaving United light in midfield, Fernandes’ timely addition is a boost to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad.
Solskjaer confirmed on Wednesday night that he wanted to sign a striker, having seen both Mason Greenwood and Anthony Martial struggle in their 1-0 Carabao Cup win over Manchester City.
United allowed Romelu Lukaku to join Inter Milan before the start of the season but failed to replace him. That left Solskjaer with Marcus Rashford, Martial and Greenwood as the only options up front.
But a back injury to Rashford which could rule him out for more than two months has only further highlighted why the forward department is in desperate need of strengthening, as they do not have another reliable forward to score goals regularly.
That being said, the Red Devils must go for Timo Werner in the summer transfer window. The 23-year-old has been scoring goals regularly in the last two seasons in the Bundesliga, making him one of Europe’s most clinical forwards today. Werner scored 16 goals and supplied nine assists in 30 Bundesliga games last season, bettering his 2017/18 campaign’s numbers of 13 goals and eight assists.

So far this season, he has netted 25 goals across all competitions and is showing no signs of slowing down. The Germany international has solid European experience as well and at 23, would rightly fit Solskjaer’s vision of rebuilding a United side consisting predominantly of young players and academy products.
Verdict
With United yet to replace Lukaku, Solskjaer must plot a summer transfer swoop for Werner. The German would not only bolster Solskjaer’s attacking ranks but also add some much-needed depth to the squad to compete on all fronts next season.
