Why Manchester City should keep hold of Leroy Sane

According to The Telegraph, Manchester City have to wait in their efforts to Leroy Sane moving away from the club in the summer after the winger switched agents.

The report also suggests that Sane’s teammates are convinced that he will leave for Bayern Munich, who have been his long-term admirers, at the end of the season. The German giants tried to sign him last summer but an injury forced them to back off from the move but their interest in him has not faded.

Sane, 24, who came through Schalke’s youth ranks, made 57 senior appearances for the German outfit. In the process, he scored 13 goals and provided 8 assists and became one of the best young talents across Europe.

His impressive performances were enough to convince Manchester City, who took him on board in the summer of 2016. Since then, the speedster has made 134 appearances for the club, scoring 39 goals and setting up a whopping 45 assists for his teammates.

In his four years at Etihad, Sane has won several trophies, including two Premier League titles successively. He established himself as one of the wingers in England’s top-flight but missed a chance to play in the World Cup for his country.

Meanwhile, Manchester City haven’t been at their best this season, having already lost 6 league games. Their only hope to claim the league title is next season and to do that, they need to have a depth in their squad and be at their lethal best.

First and foremost, Pep Guardiola has to bring in reinforcements for their backline, which has been vulnerable this season, conceding 29 goals, which is poor according to their standards.

The next important work Guardiola has is to see that the key members remain in the squad. And therefore, Leroy Sane must not be allowed to leave the club at any cost.

Sane is a world-class player and has the ability to change the fate of a game on his own. He would be a crucial player on the left side of the pitch. Raheem Sterling was in fine form at the start of the season but in the past few months, he seems to have lost his goalscoring touch.

The Englishman hasn’t scored or provided an assist in the last six league games and looks to be out of form. In such a scenario, the German would be very helpful for the team. The manager can rotate his squad and keep them fit throughout the season.

The 24-year-old has returned from a long-term injury, as the report suggests, and if he can get his feet running, City’s attacking unit would become unstoppable once again.

Verdict

City need to be lethal right from the start of the next season if they are to challenge for the Premier League title. This would be possible only if they have depth in their squad and missing out on Sane could prove to be costly. Therefore, Guardiola has to convince the German and stop him from leaving for the Bundesliga.
