Why Manchester City should keep hold of Leroy Sane amidst Bayern interest

According to Mirror, Manchester City forward Leroy Sane is on the verge of joining German Champions Bayern Munich for £70m.

Sane, 24, has established himself as one of the best wingers in Europe after his exploits for City and Germany over the past few years. His five-year contract with the Cityzens is set to expire next summer. He could be on the move back to Germany after making 134 appearances for the Etihad outfit (h/t Mirror).

Sane has played a major role in several of Manchester City’s titles in the past. He is one of the key members of the side. But he was out for the majority of the 2019/20 season due to a cruciate ligament injury and had just returned to training before the league got suspended.

Meanwhile, Pep Guardiola’s side has struggled throughout the campaign as they have lacked the intensity to match league leaders Liverpool. Despite City’s attacking unit performing decently, they have lacked consistency in other areas, especially in defence.

However, the manager should start thinking about how the team can catch up to Liverpool in the upcoming season. One of the key issues they would be facing is Sane’s future. The former Schalke man has been at his best in the past three years for City. His loss would be a huge blow to the manager.

Raheem Sterling and Sane are the only two available wingers in the squad that are comfortable playing on the left. Both Riyad Mahrez and Bernardo Silva much more effective on the right flank.

Sterling has featured regularly in the absence of Sane, scoring 20 goals in 39 games while providing 7 assists. But as the games kept coming thick and fast, Sterling felt the heat and has failed to score in the last 6 league games.

Thus, keeping hold of Sane would be a huge boost for Man City. His presence would be a benefit to the squad as he has the ability to change the course of the game in any situation.

The German international has made major contributions in the past for City since arriving in 2016. Sane contributed with 10 goals and 15 assists in his second season in the Premier League. He then followed it with 10 goals and 11 assists last season and has been instrumental for Guardiola’s side.

Sane is just 24 and has already proven his worth to this Manchester City side. With age on his side, the winger has a lot to offer in the future. Thus, keeping him in their ranks would help City continue with their dominance.

Verdict

With limited options on the left, it would be safe for City to keep hold of Leroy Sane as he is capable of working wonders for the side. The German has proven his quality in the past and his presence can bring the club both goals and assists at a higher rate. It would also allow Guardiola to rotate his troops better and keep the squad fit and firing.
