Why Manchester City should keep hold of Sergio Aguero amidst interest

According to The Sun, Argentine club Independiente are interested in signing Manchester City star Sergio Aguero, who has just one more year left on his contract at the Etihad.

Aguero, 33, established himself as one of the best strikers in Europe with Atletico Madrid, scoring 100 goals before moving to Manchester City. He became an instant hit in England and has made a name for himself as a world-class centre-forward.

The Argentine was instrumental in City’s Premier League winning campaign in his debut season and thereafter went on to help the club lift four league titles. In 22 games this term, he has already scored 16 goals and is third in the list of highest scorers of the league behind Jamie Vardy and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Meanwhile, Pep Guardiola’s men have not been consistent throughout the campaign. As a team, they gave failed to defend their title and are currently in 2nd position but 25 points behind league leaders Liverpool.

One of the chief reasons for their lacklustre performance is the lack of quality and depth in their defensive unit. Thus, Guardiola should look into the matter by bringing in reinforcements to their backline.

However, their attacking unit has done a decent job so far, scoring 68 goals and Aguero has led the line brilliantly as he usually does. Thus, keeping him at the club for a few more years would benefit the manager and the club.

Manchester City have only two centre-forwards in their ranks in Gabriel Jesus and Aguero. While Aguero has been in sensational form over the past decade for City, Jesus has not been consistent and could also be on the move, with Juventus showing interest in the Brazilian, as per a report from The Sun.

And if the strike duo leaves in the summer, City would be left without a natural striker. Thus, holding on to Aguero would be a wise decision.

At 33, the Argentine forward doesn’t seem to slow down and he could continue at the highest level for some years. He has settled well in the Premier League, scoring 254 goals for the English champions and City would never get a better target man than Aguero.

The former Atletico Madrid star is a proven goalscorer and his attacking prowess is matched by very few in the league. He has also overtaken Thierry Henry as the highest goalscorer in England by a foreign international and could play a key part next season for the Etihad outfit if he is able to keep himself away from injuries.

Verdict

Aguero has time and again shown his importance for the club and would undoubtedly be the perfect leader for City. He has scored 20 or more goals in 7 league seasons for City and if they sell him, they are sure to see a decrease in their goals tally.

Therefore, City should avoid any temptation for the star forward and keep him in the club by handing a new contract.
