Man City would be wise to offload this star who won Young Player of The Year in 2018 – Agreed?

Why Manchester City should offload Leroy Sane

Leroy Sane has gone from being the future of Manchester City to being embroiled in a transfer saga in the course of two seasons. After winning the Young Player of the Year award in 2018 for his displays in a City shirt, as manager Pep Guardiola secured his first set of silverware in English football, the winger saw limited action the last term.

Sane is currently still rehabilitating from the ACL injury he suffered in the Community Shield at the beginning of the 2019/20 season.

Bayern Munich were heavily linked with the winger in the summer and they will come back for a move in January as well, as per German publication Bild (h/t The Mirror). With two years remaining on his contract, the German champions will have to come up with the cash required to prise him away from England.

City boss Pep Guardiola should ideally retain the 23-year-old but at the same time, he must force any player who doesn’t want to be there.

Bayern, who are currently behind Bundesliga leaders RB Leipzig, could expedite a move to give impetus to a challenge for their eighth successive title. Sane is capable of potentially being the perfect replacement for wingers Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben, both of whom left in the summer.

He would also be free to play for the Germans in the Champions League, having not featured in Europe so far this season.

A forward line of Robert Lewandowski, Serge Gnabry and Sane would have all the makings of becoming one of the most frightening in Europe. In fact, it could put Bayern back among the favourites for their first Champions League success since 2013.

With Mahrez and Bernardo Silva searching for more game time in a City shirt, Sane’s departure will not affect the team as much as it might have two years ago. In fact, despite his limited role in the last term, the team did just fine without him on the pitch.

Verdict

Sane has found it difficult to get into the City first-team in recent times. Towards the end of the last top-flight season, he hardly featured for the club. This year, Mahrez and Bernardo Silva have been in good form for the team in blue. Come January, selling Sane will be the right thing for Manchester City to do.
