Why Manchester United have done right in handing Scott McTominay a new deal
According to Sky Sports, midfielder Scott McTominay has committed his future to Manchester United by signing a new five-year deal.
The 23-year-old’s current contract with the Red Devils was set to expire in the summer of 2021. However, the new deal will keep him at the club until the end of 2025. McTominay has been with United since his youth days, coming through various age-group levels.
Though he struggled in his youth days, he has come a long way since making his debut for the senior team against Burton Albion in the EFL Cup in 2017 under Jose Mourinho. He has been impressive for United so far and has been one of the best players in the squad.
The Red Devils, meanwhile, have bounced back after a slow start to the campaign. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men have done a decent job in the latter stages of the game and are currently in the 5th position in the league table. They have gone unbeaten in their last 13 games across all competitions.
And of the major reasons for their progress in the campaign is due to the stability in midfield. Bruno Fernandes has brought flair to United’s attack, acting as the creative head. However, it is the form of Fred and McTominay that has helped them in their resurrection. Thus, handing a new deal to the Scottish international was the right decision by the club.
McTominay could be a future leader for United in midfield
The youngster has been one of the most improved players in the squad. After struggling in his first season, he has been brilliant this term. Though he struggled with injuries and was out of action for nearly two months, his return has been a huge boost to the squad.
Prior to his injury, he alongside Fred were the two players who made up for the absence of Paul Pogba. And McTominay has also added goals to his game. Last season, he managed just 2 goals but with 4 goals in 22 league games this term, he has taken his game to the next level.
The Scotsman is capable of playing in both the advanced and the deep-lying role and his services for a few more years would be handy for the manager. He has improved a lot and has been commanding on the pitch, whilst there has been a lot of difference in his work rate also.

Thus, by handing a new contract to the 23-year-old, United have taken a step in the right direction.
