Transfer rumours are coming thick and fast these days, with the January transfer window in full swing. Numerous clubs are eager to make some deals happen as soon as possible, but there are always those that are more interesting than others. It emerged on Tuesday that Inter Milan are interested in Manchester United captain Ashley Young, as per Sky Sports.
Young was left out of the squad for United’s 3-1 Carabao Cup defeat to Manchester City. The 34-year-old’s contract expires at the end of the season. Young joined United from Aston Villa in 2011 and was a part of the squads that won the Premier League, FA Cup and EFL Cup.
He has gone on to make over 250 appearances for the club under Sir Alex Ferguson, David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. He lost his spot to Aaron Wan-Bissaka when he arrived this summer and Solskjaer has often deployed Luke Shaw and Brandon Williams at left-back.
Manchester United and Inter Milan appear to have a good working relationship. The Red Devils sold Romelu Lukaku to the Nerazzurri and allowed Alexis Sanchez to move to the San Siro on a season-long loan last summer.
Young would not be the first Manchester United defender to move to Italy this season if he were to join Inter. Chris Smalling went on loan to Roma in August. The Englishman extended his contract with United in February 2019 but he now has just six months left to run on his deal.
Club captain Young was omitted from the City squad along with fellow left-back Luke Shaw, who missed three months of the campaign with a hamstring injury.
He has fallen down the pecking order, with Brandon Williams and Luke Shaw preferred at left-back. Aaron Wan-Bissaka is backed up by Diogo Dalot on the right, meaning Young is struggling for game time. It will be great business by United if they sell Young and get a bit of a transfer fee rather than lose him for free at the end of the season.
