Why Manchester United must replace Solskjaer with Gareth Southgate
According to Daily Mail, Manchester United are considering replacing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with England manager Gareth Southgate. The report suggests that Southgate is a leading contender to take over after the Euro 2020 if the results do not improve at Old Trafford this season.
Southgate, 49, started his managerial career with Middlesbrough and went on to become the England U21 manager. He was then appointed as the caretaker manager of the senior team. In November 2016, he became the manager of the England national team on a permanent basis.
In the 2018 FIFA World Cup, Southgate became the third manager to reach a World Cup semi-final with the England team.
Before he took over as the caretaker boss of the national team, they were in a bad state under Sam Allardyce. Southgate then changed the team’s complexion and thereafter, the results started flowing in the squad’s favour.
The 49-year-old’s England team have done well and they seem to be in good shape ahead of the mega event in the summer.
Meanwhile, United have not been the same mighty force that they were under Sir Alex Ferguson. In fact, the Red Devils are in a bad state this term too.
Unlike Frank Lampard at Chelsea, Solskjaer has been at the helm for a long time but he has been unable to improve the situation. The failure to sign a striker has resulted in a major decline as far as United’s goalscoring numbers are concerned. In addition, there has been no proper co-ordination without Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba in the middle of the park.
Meanwhile, Southgate’s men have scored 27 goals in their last 6 international games. And as the report suggests, the Englishman has been a regular in the stands at Old Trafford.
Solskjaer’s winning percentage has also been low at United, whereas Southgate has lost only 8 out of 37 games as England’s manager. And he also admires the way the club develop their players, as per the report.
Verdict
Solskjaer is struggling to steady the ship and it would be the right thing for United to bring in the Watford-born manager.
