According to The Express, Manchester United want to sign a world-class striker in PSG’s Edinson Cavani to add firepower to their attacking unit.
Cavani, 33, has established himself as one of the best strikers in Europe with Napoli and Paris Saint-Germain. He is the French outfit’s all-time top scorer with 200 goals to his name and is one of the most prolific goalscorers in the game.
The Uruguayan’s contract with the club comes to an end in the summer and Manchester United should be able to sign him on a free transfer. This would help them add depth in their attacking unit and form a strong frontline.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has managed to bring the best out of his team in the past few months. United have gone unbeaten in the last 11 games and have a good record both defensively and offensively. Yet, they need to look into the centre-forward position and strengthen the squad for various challenges in the next season.
Marcus Rashford is United’s top scorer with 19 goals this season but his injury had put them on the back foot. However, the Red Devils managed to bring in Odion Ighalo to cover up for their loss and he has done well so far with 4 goals in his last three starts.
Mason Greenwood broke into the first team and has done a decent job, scoring 14 goals throughout the campaign. But, he cannot be depended upon to lead the line for a whole season. He is just 18 and still in his learning curve. And Anthony Martial, despite getting onto the scoresheet frequently in recent weeks, has been inconsistent.
Therefore, United need to sign a player who has experience and can be helpful to the squad in a difficult situation. In that regard, Edinson Cavani would be a viable option for the Red Devils.
The 33-year-old is a proven goalscorer at the top level for both club and country and has an experience of over 500 games, which spans across 3 different clubs. He would be a better option up front with the likes of Rashford and Ighalo; if the Nigerian is signed permanently next season.
Cavani has scored 341 goals in 556 club-level games and also has 50 goals to his name at the international level. He has been consistent over the past decade despite featuring in just 14 games this season. Given his track record, he would be the right person to guide the forwards in United’s ranks for a few seasons and help the club improve their goalscoring record, which has drastically fallen since Sir Alex Ferguson left the club.
The former Napoli man maybe 33 but he still has the energy left to play at a higher level and would definitely add quality and depth to Solskjaer’s squad.
Therefore, United should push hard to secure Cavani’s signature and bring him to Old Trafford before the new season commences.
