According to Daily Star, Manchester United are looking to revive their interest in Atletico Madrid star Saul Niguez ahead of the new campaign.
The report also suggests that United are willing to offer a deal worth £150,000-a-week for the Spaniard. The Red Devils have been long-term admirers of Niguez and thus, they should lure him to Old Trafford.
Born in Spain, Niguez started his journey with Real Madrid’s youth system before switching to the other side of Madrid. He rose through the ranks of Atletico Madrid and made his debut in the 2011/12 campaign. After initially struggling to find regular game time, he was sent on a season-long loan spell to Rayo Vallecano.
Since his return, he has been a regular member of the squad and has established himself as a key member under Diego Simeone. He played a key role in Atletico’s Europa League title-winning campaign in 2017/18 and also helped his lift the UEFA Super Cup that following year.
Niguez is considered to be one of the best midfielders in Europe and should United look to sign a central midfielder, Niguez would be a valuable option.
Having finished 3rd in the league standings, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should look to bring in reinforcements to several key areas. At the moment, United have three central midfielders in the squad. Paul Pogba has been brilliant since his return from injury, inspiring United to qualify for the Champions League.
Fred and Scott McTominay are the other two midfielders. Both of them did well in the absence of Pogba but since the restart, they haven’t been able to push for a starting role. Nemanja Matic is the only other midfielder but he is defensive in nature. Thus, signing another attack-minded midfielder would help United bolster their squad.
In that regard, Niguez seems to be a sensible option for the club. The Spaniard has been at his best in the last few seasons and has already made nearly 400 career appearances. He is a world-class talent and could provide United with some much-needed goals from the midfield.
His inclusion to the squad would definitely stock up United’s midfield options, whilst also bringing healthy competition. He has been at the top level for many years and could be crucial for the team in the Champions League next season.
At 25, Niguez is in the form of his life and United could do better with one more central midfielder in the squad. He could also go on to represent them in the long run. Thus, they should manage to lure the Spaniard to Old Trafford this summer and improve their options in the middle of the park.
