According to Daily Star, Dimitar Berbatov has urged Manchester United to sign Sergio Ramos as it would work out well for them. He was of the opinion that Ramos could follow in the footsteps of Thiago Silva who joined Chelsea this summer, should Real Madrid and he not reach a mutual agreement over a new contract.
Ramos’ current deal runs out at the end of this season and he will be free to talk to other clubs in January regarding a pre-contract agreement. (h/t Daily Star)
Sergio Ramos is one of the household names in European football and certainly amongst the best centre-backs in the world. A youth product of Sevilla, the Spaniard made his move to Madrid back in 2005 and has established himself as one of the mainstays of the club’s defence over the course of his illustrious and distinguished career in the La Liga.
The 34-year-old has racked up a mammoth 660 appearances for Real Madrid over the course of 14 years, accumulating 100 goals and 40 assists in the process (h/t Transfermarkt). Stats which are certainly jaw-dropping for a centre-back. There’s hardly any accolade left for him to get his hands on and he has probably won everything that a footballer could dream of.
Ramos’ trophy collection at Madrid includes 5 La Liga titles, 4 Champions League titles, 4 FIFA Club World Cups, 2 Copa del Rey trophies and 3 UEFA Super Cups. It is beyond doubt that he is one of the most high-profile footballers in the world.
The 34-year-old, who boasts of 178 international caps for Spain under his belt, has also tasted plenty of silverware on the international arena, having won the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the UEFA Euro in 2008 and 2012. To sum it up, Ramos has won everything but he is still only 34 and has plenty to offer at the highest level.
Under normal circumstances, it would seem absurd linking Ramos with some other club but the situation is rolling into a bit of uncertainty. Ramos has been at loggerheads with Real Madrid over a new contract as his existing deal trickles down to the last few months (h/t The Sun).
Manchester United’s defensive issues have resurfaced again this season with the club not signing a new defender in the summer. The club have already lost three league games this season, conceding 16 goals in their 9 league games. They also lost to Istanbul Basaksehir in the Champions League due to some shambolic defending.
Yes, the pandemic has hit the club’s finances and spending has been affected due to that but they really need at least one world-class centre-back immediately. Sergio Ramos represents them with probably the best short-term solution to this problem.
A world-class defender despite the age, Ramos can completely alter the look of Manchester United’s shaky backline. He is a ferocious leader on the pitch, something that the club desperately need. Manchester United should try to take some advantage of the situation at Real Madrid. Signing Ramos on a pre-contract can be one of the best decisions the club can take in January.
