According to the Mirror, Sergio Ramos is said to prefer a move to the Premier League in the summer and Manchester United is his first choice.
The Real Madrid stalwart is in the final six months of his contract and it looks uncertain that he will extend his stay at the club. A host of probable destinations have been mooted as his next club but the player’s camp will likely try to secure a move to the English giants in the summer. (h/t Mirror)
Even a few months ago, the thought of Manchester United being Premier League contenders sounded delusional. However, that is exactly what has transpired. Coupled with some patchy form shown by other sides and some fantastic displays from the Red Devils sees them sit 2nd in the table.
It is surely through a lot of work that Manchester United find themselves in such a position. Nonetheless, there are still areas of the squad that need some revamping. One of them is central defence.
Harry Maguire has been the go-to central defender for Solskjaer alongside Victor Lindelof. In recent games, it is Eric Bailly who has taken the Swede’s place.
It may look that the side are well-settled in terms of their defence but they are still susceptible to conceding goals. Maguire isn’t the most mobile of defenders and Lindelof leaves a lot to be desired in terms of his ability.
Eric Bailly may just be United’s best defender when fit but he is a huge injury risk. Adding a world-class defender to this side can do wonders, even if it’s on a short term.
Under normal circumstances, it would seem absurd to link Ramos with some other club but the situation is rolling into a bit of uncertainty. Ramos has been at loggerheads with Real Madrid over a new contract as his existing deal trickles down to the last few months (h/t The Sun).
Manchester United’s defensive issues have resurfaced again this season with the club not signing a new defender in the summer. The club have already lost 4 league games this season, conceding 27 goals in their 22 league games.
Yes, the pandemic has hit the club’s finances and spending has been affected due to that but they really need at least one world-class centre-back immediately. Sergio Ramos provides them with probably the best short-term solution to this problem.
A world-class defender despite 34 years of age, Ramos can completely alter the look of Manchester United’s shaky backline. He is a ferocious leader on the pitch, something that the club desperately needs.
Manchester United should try to take some advantage of the situation at Real Madrid. Signing Ramos on a free transfer at the end of the season can be one of the best decisions the club can take.
