Man Utd keeping close eye on £60m-rated winger – Should Solskjaer sign him?

Why Manchester United signing Federico Chiesa would be a brilliant move

According to Daily Mail, Manchester United are keeping a close eye on Fiorentina winger Federico Chiesa ahead of a possible summer move.

The report also suggests that United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had sent scouts to watch Chiesa in action against AC Milan last weekend. The Italian is valued at £60m by his club.

Chiesa, 22, came through the youth ranks of Fiorentina and was promoted to the club’s senior team in the summer of 2016. He made his professional debut that season in a 2-1 loss against Juventus and since then he has been a regular member of the squad.

He has been improving and has a handful of assists in the last three campaigns. His performances also earned him a call up to the national squad as he made his debut for Italy in March 2018. He has already made 17 appearances for his country despite his tender age and is considered to be one of Italy’s best prospects.

Meanwhile, United have been doing much better since the arrival of Bruno Fernandes, who has brought life into Red Devils’ boring attack. His creativity has been on point and has helped his club beat Chelsea and Watford in the past few weeks. His goal also clinched a point for United in their 1-1 draw against Everton.

Solskjaer’s side are currently 5th in the league standings but several players have been inconsistent throughout the campaign and the manager should bring in reinforcements.

The defensive unit seems to be clicking well but they need to reinforce their attack, especially on the wings. Daniel James has been playing on both sides as United have limited options on the flanks. Jesse Lingard is the only option available in the right-wing but his performances have been abysmal, scoring just 2 goals and providing 2 assists throughout the campaign.

Hence, going all out for a right-winger in the summer would be a good decision by the Red Devils and United should prioritize signing Federico Chiesa from Fiorentina.

The 22-year-old has been in fine form for the last three years and has featured in 22 Serie A games this season, scoring 6 goals and providing 5 assists. He has also put in two Man of The Match performances this campaign, scoring the winning goal against Sampdoria being at his best against Napoli.

Predominantly a right-winger, he is capable of playing anywhere across the frontline and his versatile nature of play would come in handy for the club.

Verdict

Chiesa is just 22 and already has an experience of 138 games for the Serie A outfit. He has the ability to continue at a higher level for a long time and United must take a chance to enjoy his brilliance.
