Why Manchester United should make a move for Willian

As per France Football (h/t Express), Manchester United are weighing up a move for Chelsea forward Willian in the summer.

Willian, 31, came through the ranks of Corinthians’ youth system and made a name for him in Ukraine with Shakhtar Donetsk. In 6 years with the Ukrainian giants, he made 221 appearances, scoring 37 goals and providing 63 assists. He moved to Russia with Anzhi Makhachkala for a year before he made his way to the Premier League with Chelsea.

Since his arrival in London, he has established himself as one of the best wingers in Europe. He has won a handful of trophies with the Blues, including two Premier League titles, and has been an integral part of the squad.

Manchester United, meanwhile, have managed to turn the tide in their favour after a slow start to the campaign. They are currently in the 5th position in the league table and are also going strong in the race to reach the finals of the Europa League. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men have also made progress in the FA Cup.

Before the suspension of the games, United were unbeaten in the last 11 games across all competitions. However, with the season coming to an end soon, the manager should bring in reinforcements to ensure that there is depth in every department in order to do better in further campaigns.

Willian’s experience could be vital in United’s attack

One area where the manager should focus on strengthening is the wide areas. Marcus Rashford has been brilliant on the left flank, whereas, the same cannot be said for on the opposite side. Daniel James made a productive start to life on the right but he showed inconsistency in between.

Jesse Lingard has failed miserably and is yet to be involved in a goal for United in the league this term. Young Tahith Chong has also not lived up to the expectations. Thus, a right-winger in the summer could come in handy for the Red Devils.

In that regard, signing Willian would be a smart move by the club. The Brazilian has made 584 career appearances and has been successful in whichever clubs he has played for. He has scored and assisted 59 times each for Chelsea and has immense experience in English football.

His inclusion to Solskjaer’s squad would be a massive boost and he would bring in healthy competition within the squad. He has already racked up 5 goals and 5 assists in 28 league games this term and would add more quality and depth to United’s squad.

Verdict

At 31, Willian still has the energy left to play at a higher level for a few more years. And with a lack of quality on the right flank, United would be well-served by signing Brazilian veteran in the next season. Thus, they should try to lure the winger to Old Trafford once his time with Chelsea comes to an end.
