Why Matias Vecino to Everton would be a good signing

According to Daily Star, Inter Milan midfielder Matias Vecino could be off to Everton this month with the club in talks over a swoop.

Vecino, 28, has made 17 appearances for Antonio Conte’s side in all competitions this season, scoring two goals. He has been a regular for the Nerazzurri since his arrival from Fiorentina in the summer of 2017 and has featured in 88 games for the side in the last two years.

The report suggests that Inter are keen to offload the midfielder as they need funds to sign Tottenham’s Christian Eriksen. Therefore, with talks of a switch to the Premier League, the club left him out of the squad against Lecce on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the Toffees have turned things around for themselves after enduring the worst start to the season under sacked manager Marco Silva. They have climbed up the table to 11th position after languishing around the relegation zone before.

After selling star midfielder Idrissa Gueye to Paris Saint-Germain last summer, Everton brought in Jean-Philippe Gbamin and Fabian Delph to boost their ranks in the central areas. And Andre Gomes’ loan move was also made permanent.

However, despite making changes to the squad, the Toffees failed to live up to the expectation and midfield has been an area of concern since the start of this term. Gbamin has been out of the squad due to a hamstring injury and has featured only twice this season. Former Manchester City man Fabian Delph seems to have slowed down and hasn’t made major contributions so far.

Portuguese international Gomes was a regular in the midfield before he got injured and his absence made it worse for the side. Other central options in the squad have not done well and that has resulted in the lack of confidence in their games.

Therefore, signing Vecino would be a great idea by Ancelotti. According to Whoscored, in defensive situations, Vecino has registered 1.9 tackles, 1 interception and 1.1 clearances per game in the Serie A.

Verdict

Vecino’s qualities can be effective for Everton. Therefore, the Toffees must do everything possible to see Vecino move to Goodison Park this month.
