According to Sky Germany (h/t The Express), Chelsea are tracking the progress of Borussia Monchengladbach star Matthias Ginter ahead of the summer transfer window.
Having risen through the ranks at Freiburg, Ginter, 24, came to prominence during his time at Borussia Dortmund. He was also a part of Germany’s squad which won the 2014 World Cup and has established himself as one of the best defenders in Bundesliga. After making 102 appearances for Dortmund, he was signed by Monchengladbach in the summer of 2017.
Since then, he has been a regular member of the squad and has been one of the main players to help his side finish within the top four this term. He is also a regular member of the German national team and his impressive performances have garnered the attention of several top teams. Clubs like Arsenal and Inter Milan are also keen on signing Ginter in the summer, as per the report.
The Blues, meanwhile, have managed to secure a Champions League spot for next season after their 2-0 win over Wolves on the last day of the league. Despite not being able to spend last summer, Frank Lampard has done a stellar job with the youngsters in his squad.
However, the manager needs to bring in reinforcements and strengthen several key areas in the squad. They have been inconsistent on many occasions and to avoid any shortcoming, Chelsea need to be active in the ongoing transfer window.
Lampard needs to address the backline now given that he already has Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner in the bag. The defensive unit has been miserable as they have conceded 54 goals this campaign, which is the worst defensive record in the top half of the Premier League table.
Andreas Christensen, Kurt Zouma and Fikayo Tomori were given their fair share of game time but none of them convinced the manager. At the moment, Antonio Rudiger seems to be the only player in form for the Blues at the back. And Chelsea don’t have adequate options at the back. Thus, a centre-back is a must in the summer.
In that regard, making a move for Ginter seems to be sensible by the club. The German international has been in sensational form for Monchengladbach is this season, featuring in 36 games across all competitions. He has been a key part of the squad which has conceded just 40 goals in Bundesliga and boasts of the second-best defensive record this term.
His inclusion would definitely add quality to the squad, whilst also bringing healthy competition. Given his consistency and reliable performances, he could walk straight into Lampard’s starting XI and can form a strong partnership with his countryman Rudiger, who has run out of effective partners.
Given the lack of quality and limited options at the back, it is clear that a defensive signing is needed for Chelsea. And Ginter’s addition could make them strong at the back if he is able to continue with the fine form. Thus, they should go all out and make a move for the 29-cap German international this month.
