Why Max Aarons can be a long-term signing for Manchester United

According to The Sun, Manchester United lead the race to sign Norwich City starlet Max Aarons. The Red Devils want to sign another right-back to provide some competition for Wan-Bissaka and depth to the position. Everton, Arsenal and Liverpool are the other Premier League sides interested in Aarons.

Manchester United need another right-back

With Timothy Fosu-Mensah departing for Bayer Leverkusen, it leaves Manchester United a bit short staffed at right-back. Even Brandon Williams has been tipped for an exit from the club. In case he does leave, it would mean that Aaron Wan-Bissaka will remain as the only right-back in the squad. Remember Diogo Dalot is also out on loan at AC Milan.

So, if any injury or suspension were to happen to Wan-Bissaka, it would leave the club without a natural right-back. There does, however, remain another reason to bring in another right-back. Wan-Bissaka’s attacking contribution leaves the team a bit unbalanced in shape. He isn’t like the modern full-backs who like to maraud up the flanks, putting in crosses. That leaves a lot of work for the right-sided forward to do.

Aarons can be the long term solution for Manchester United

In that sense, Aarons represents an option they can look to sign. The youngster had a fantastic breakthrough season for Norwich in the Premier League last term. Although the Canaries ended up getting relegated, Aarons did himself no harm with his performances.

The 21-year-old English full-back started his youth career at Luton Town in 2009 before moving to Norwich’s youth setup in 2014. In total, he has played for the Canaries 108 times, including 25 games this season. He has 4 goals and 11 assists to show for those appearances (h/t Transfermarkt). His Premier League experience is also likely to be a huge asset for United.

The Norwich man would be the ideal option for United to have as a competition for Wan-Bissaka. Much like modern full-backs, Aarons likes to maraud down the flanks and get involved in the attacking play. He would represent a smart bit of business from the club in terms of adding depth and competition to the side.
