Why M’Baye Niang to Newcastle United would bolster their attack

As per Footmercato (h/t Chronicle Live), Newcastle United have been credited with an interest in Rennes forward M’Baye Niang ahead of the summer window.

Niang, 25, came through the ranks of SM Caen’s youth system and joined AC Milan in the summer of August 2012. Though he was with the Italian giants for six years, he made only 79 appearances for the club as he was sent out on loan.

In the summer of 2018, he joined Torino but a month later, he was sent on loan to Rennes. In his first season with the French outfit, he racked up 11 goals and 5 assists in 29 league games and revived his career. He has continued with the fine form this season. His impressive performances have garnered the attention of Qatari club Al-Duhail and Premier League side West Ham, as per the report.

Niang could be a leader in the attack for Newcastle

The Magpies have managed to score just 28 goals in 30 games so far which is the second-lowest in the league this term. Summer signing Joelinton has failed to live up to the expectations. He has scored just 2 goals this campaign and has also not received enough support up front.

Andy Carroll, Dwight Gayle and Yoshinori Muto are yet to open their account in the league this term and have not produced a notable performance yet. And the lack of consistency in front of goal has led to the failure of the team. Thus, a striker is a must for the Magpies.

In that regard, signing Niang would be a good move by the club. After struggling in Serie A, the Senegalese ace seems to have got back on track since his return to France. He finished as Rennes’ top scorer last season and scored 10 goals in 26 games this term, providing 2 assists as well.

The 25-year-old’s career has taken an upward turn in the last two seasons and his inclusion to Bruce’s squad would definitely add depth to the squad. He would also bring healthy competition to the squad. He would be a quality addition to Newcastle if he is able to replicate his current form.

Verdict

With Carroll’s contract coming to an end this summer and the lack of quality up front, it is clear that the Magpies are in dire need of centre-forwards. Niang is just 25 and has a lot to offer. Thus, Newcastle should lure him to St. James’ Park at the earliest.
