As per Calciomercato (h/t Liverpool Echo), Everton are interested in signing Lyon forward Memphis Depay in a bid to bolster their squad for the next season.
Depay, 26, is a product of PSV Eindhoven’s youth system. He made his breakthrough in the 2011/12 season and went on to feature in 124 games for the Duct outfit. He helped his side lift the Dutch League title in the 2014/15 season, where he ended as Eredivisie’s top scorer with 22 goals. After an impressive outing in the 2014 World Cup, he was signed by Manchester United that summer.
However, he didn’t enjoy the best of times at Old Trafford and was traded to Lyon in January 2017. He once again revived his career and has been a key member of the squad. Though he has been sidelined for the majority of the campaign, he is one of the best European talents.
And, the report suggests that AC Milan are also interested in him as he has just 12 months left on his contract with the French outfit.
Apart from Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, none of the Everton forwards has impressed so far. They have failed as a unit and thus, Ancelotti should strengthen the squad by bringing in reinforcements. While they are in dire need of defensive reinforcements, the Toffees should also bring in forwards who could support the likes of Richarlison and Calvert-Lewin.
Alex Iwobi, Bernard and Theo Walcott are the three wingers available at the manager’s disposal. The Brazilian has done a decent job so far, racking up 4 goals and 2 assists but the two former Arsenal men have failed miserably. Iwobi has struggled with injuries, whereas Walcott has been inconsistent.
They have combined to score just 2 goals and 2 assists so far. Walcott is already 31 and is reaching the rear end of his career. He also has just one year left on his contract with the Toffees. Thus, a winger is a must in the summer.
In that regard, signing Depay would do them a world of good. In the last two seasons, the Dutchman has scored 29 goals in Ligue 1. He managed to find the back of the net 9 times in 13 league games this season, before picking up a season-ending injury.
The former Manchester United man seems to be in good form. He has the ability to add firepower to any attack and given his current form, he could be a valuable addition to Ancelotti’s squad.
With a lack of quality in the wide areas, Everton are in dire need of wingers in their squad. And Depay could provide them with much-needed goals. His qualities could never be doubted and he would also add depth to their attacking unit. Thus, the Toffees should manage to lure him to England this summer.
