Why Everton should revive their interest in Napoli’s Allan

Back in January, Calciomercato (h/t Forbes), claimed that Everton were in a battle for Napoli midfielder Allan, who was backed to move away from Naples after the club signed two midfielders.

Allan, 29, came through the ranks of Vasco da Gama’s youth system in Brazil before featuring for Udinese Calcio in Italy. He was then signed by Napoli in the summer of 2015 and immediately established himself in the club’s starting XI.

In his 5 years at the San Paolo stadium, the Brazilian has made 203 appearances and contributed with 10 goals and 16 assists. He was a key member until the start of this season but has now fallen down the pecking order under Genaro Gattuso.

Meanwhile, the Toffees looked to get stronger after the arrival of Carlo Ancelotti but their recent dip in form suggests otherwise. They are currently 12th in the league table after a three-match winless streak.

Carlo Ancelotti had a chance to bring in reinforcements during January but he signed only Jarrod Branthwaite for their U18 side. This has not helped them in the league as they have fallen short of in-from midfielders.

Andre Gomes was performing decently before an ankle injury forced him out of action for quite a long time. Tom Davies and Fabian Delph haven’t made much of an impact in the middle of the park, whereas Morgan Schneiderlin has struggled for form. Despite Everton’s attack and defence putting a big shift in their game, the midfield has not been at its best.

Therefore, the manager should prioritize strengthening the midfield and Napoli’s Allan would be a viable option for the club. The 29-year-old has been one of Napoli’s best players in the last few years and has taken his game to the next level. He has featured regularly in the last four seasons and has immense experience under his belt.

A central midfielder by trade, Allan is accustomed to both the anchoring role and the advanced role. He has also contributed with a few crucial goals and assists for his side.

The Brazilian international can cover up for Schneiderlin, who is completely out of form or for Jean-Phillipe Gbamin, who hasn’t been available to the squad since matchday 2. Allan has already worked with Ancelotti and the pair had previously done a decent job for the Italian outfit.

Verdict

Midfield is one key area where Everton have lacked quality. Despite the presence of the experienced Fabian Delph, they have failed to take control of their games. And the Napoli star would be a boost to the squad’s depth and quality.

Hence, the Toffees must make another attempt to sign Allan in the summer as he has is capable of playing at a higher level for a few more years.
