Why Newcastle should make a move for Odsonne Edouard

According to Football Insider (h/t The Express), Newcastle United could launch a bid for Celtic forward Odsonne Edouard after Magpies boss Steve Bruce was persuaded by his son Alex.

The report suggests that Alex has encouraged the Magpies manager to launch a £30m bid for the in-form French youngster to bolster their attack.

Edouard, 22, moved to Celtic initially on loan after seeing limited game-time with Paris Saint-Germain. He rose through the French champions’ youth ranks and even played in the club’s B team but decided to move in order to play regularly.

After impressing in his loan spell, his move was made permanent in the summer of 2018. He has been in red-hot form this season, having scored 23 goals in 38 games across all competitions and further setting up 17 for his team.

In 119 appearances for the Hoops, he has scored a total of 56 goals and provided 29 assists so far and is considered as one of the best young talents across Europe. Hence, Steve Bruce should take the opportunity to sign him in the summer.

Their attacking department has struggled to score regularly and the manager should make some adjustments to the squad in the summer and get ready for the new campaign. Despite signing Joelinton, Andy Carroll, Allan Saint-Maximin and Dwight Gayle last summer to bolster their attacking unit, Newcastle have managed to score only 24 goals in 26 games.

Carroll has struggled with injuries for the majority of the season and Gayle has not yet put in a convincing performance. Both of them are yet to score in the league. Whereas, first-choice striker Joelinton has found the back of the net only once. And this is not a good sign for a Premier League team.

Therefore, to add more goals, Newcastle’s best option would be to make a move for the former Paris Saint-Germain player Odsonne Edouard.

The 23-year-old has been scoring regularly ever since his switch to Celtic Park. He would be a good addition to this Newcastle squad if he replicates his current goalscoring form for Steve Bruce.

Verdict

At 23, the Frenchman is at the right stage of his career to take a step into the Premier League and if he replicates his Celtic form at St. James’ Park, he would be able to successfully guide the Magpies to greater heights. Therefore, Steve Bruce must follow Alex Bruce’s tip and make a move for Edouard.
