According to Daily Mail, Newcastle United have inquired about the possibility of signing Sassuolo youngster Rogerio in the summer.
Rogerio, 22, spent time at the academies of Inter Milan and Juventus before joining Sassuolo initially on loan in August 2017. Last season, he was a regular member of the squad but his progress was hampered when he picked up an injury earlier in this campaign. But he came back stronger and showed immense potential towards the end.
The youngster has been one of the best players in the squad and impressed on his return from injury. Thus, Newcastle should make a move for him this summer and add the Brazilian to their squad.
One key area Steve Bruce should focus on strengthening is the backline. The defence is one of the major reasons for their downfall as they conceded 58 goals in the league, which is poor according to standards of the Premier League. And one position where they have lacked depth is the left side of the defence.
Jetro Willems was signed last summer on loan but the Dutchman returned to Eintracht Frankfurt after his loan spell was cut short due to an injury. Danny Rose’s loan spell also came to an end last month, leaving the Magpies with only Matt Ritchie available at left-back. Thus, signing a new left-back is a no-brainer for Newcastle this summer.
In that regard, Sassuolo’s Rogerio would be a good signing for the future. The youngster’s numbers may not be among the best but he has already shown immense potential. He was a regular starter last season before getting injured. And he could be a key part of Newcastle’s squad in the near future if he is able to develop under the guidance of Bruce.
His inclusion would definitely add depth to the left-back position as Ritchie has operated higher up the pitch for the majority of the campaign. If the Magpies lose out on signing Rose permanently, Rogerio could be a crucial player next season.
With limited options, it is clear that Newcastle are in dire need of left-backs. And Rogerio, who is just 22, has a lot of room for development and could go on to represent them in the future. Thus, making a move for the Brazilian would be a wise decision by the club.
