According to Egyptian journalist Omar Rabie Yassin (h/t The Shields Gazette), Newcastle have made an approach for Mahmoud Trezeguet, who plies his trade with Aston Villa.
Trezeguet, 25, came through the ranks of El Ahly Cairo’s youth system in Egypt and moved to Belgium with RSC Anderlecht. After finding himself out on several loan spells, he moved to Kasimpasa in Turkey, where he made a name for himself.
After racking up 9 goals and 9 assists for the Turkish outfit last term, he was signed by Villa last summer and has been one of the best players for the relegation-threatened side. And he is also a regular member of Egypt’s national team.
Meanwhile, Newcastle United have struggled for consistency throughout the campaign, with Steve Bruce’s side falling to 13th position in the league table. One of the chief reasons for their downfall is the lack of intensity from their forwards, who have managed just 25 goals so far, which is the lowest in the top-flight this term.
Summer signing Joelinton has failed to live up to the expectations and the rest of the strikers have been in and out of the team for the majority of the campaign without making a difference. On the flanks, Allan Saint-Maximin looks to be their best player with 2 goals and 2 assists, whereas Christian Atsu has just 3 assists to his name.
Miguel Almiron has also contributed with just 2 goals and 1 assist so far. Thus, the Magpies should look to strengthen their attack if they are to do better next season.
The Egypt international has been in fine form in the past two seasons and is capable of boosting Newcastle’s attack. He has already racked up 4 goals and 3 assists in 31 games across all competitions and could be a good addition to Bruce’s squad.
Trezeguet’s inclusion would also bring healthy competition within the squad, whilst adding much-needed depth to the squad. He is capable of operating from either flank and Bruce would have an extra option to choose from.
At 25, the former Anderlecht man has a few more years to play at a higher level. And Newcastle are in dire need of forwards to bolster their attack. Thus, making a move for Trezeguet would be a wise decision by the Tyneside club.
