Why Nordi Mukiele could solve Tottenham’s right-back conundrum
As per French outlet L’Equipe (h/t Football.london), Tottenham are interested in signing RB Leipzig right-back Nordi Mukiele this summer.
Mukiele, 22, came through the ranks of Paris FC’s youth system and joined Stade Laval’s U19 side. After featuring for the club at different age levels, he made a breakthrough in the 2014/15 season. In the summer of 2017, Montpellier signed him and he impressed there.
His eye-catching displays earned him a moved to Bundesliga with RB Leipzig, where he has developed into a fine right-back. His performances have also caught the attention of a Serie A side and Atletico Madrid, as per the report.
Meanwhile, Tottenham have endured a disappointing campaign so far. They have been dumped out of all the other cup competitions and are 8th in the league standings. The arrival of Jose Mourinho saw them get off to good start but the results haven’t gone their way since.
Injuries to key players such as Harry Kane, Heung Min-Son and Steven Bergwijn is one of the reasons for their inconsistency. But the lack of stability in their backline has been the biggest concern so far. The Lilywhites have conceded 23 goals in their last 17 games since Mourinho took charge and the defensive unit has faced a lot of issues.
While it is clear that Tottenham need to reinforce their squad with some centre-backs, it is also necessary for them to cash in on wing-backs in the summer. Kieran Trippier’s departure last summer left the squad with just one proper right-back available in Serge Aurier.
The Ivorian has been disappointing throughout the campaign and his errors have proven to be costly for the team on several occasions. Youngster Kyle Walker-Peters was also allowed to leave in January despite a lack of depth in the squad.
In that regard, signing Leipzig’s Nordi Mukiele would do them a world of good. Thy youngster’s rise over the past couple of years has been incredible. He has enjoyed a productive season so far, scoring 3 goals and providing 2 assists in 18 league games.
The Former French U21 international has been an integral part of the side that has conceded just 26 goals. They boast of the best defensive record in the Bundesliga this term. Mukiele’s versatility would be a boost to Tottenham as he can play anywhere across the backline. He can also operate in a midfield role.
Verdict
Tottenham are in dire need of a right-back and signing Mukiele would provide them with confidence. The Frenchman would also bring in healthy competition to Aurier, whilst also adding the much-needed depth. Thus, the North Londoners should lure him in the summer.
